Sunday Recipe: “Seelen” (Souls)

Happy Sunday everybody! We just came home from our weekend trip to my hometown where I celebrated my birthday again with my family and friends back there. For all my birthday celebrations, I made homemade bread. The kind I made is a kind of bread that is really popular in Southern Germany and not so well known in the North. Today, I’d like to share the awesome and VERY easy recipe for so called Seelen (meaning souls in English…) as part of my Sunday Recipe Link-Up:

Sunday Recipe - Seelen (Souls)

  • 500g (approx. 18 oz) flour
  • 1 cube of yeast
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • around 250ml (approx. 8.5 fluid oz) lukewarm water
  • 1 pinch of sugar
  • salt and caraway

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F)
  2. Mix the yeast with a little bit of the lukewarm water and add the sugar
  3. Leave the mixture for around 20 minutes at a warm place
  4. Fill the flour into a big bowl and add the yeast mix, the salt as well as the rest of the water and work well until you get a proper dough
  5. Form little bread rolls and add salt and caraway on top of them
  6. Put it in the oven for 15-20 minutes

That is how very simple it is. I often make them for breakfast or as a side dish when we are having a soup or a salad. It is also a perfect snack for a party buffet! The souls taste best when you eat them with fresh butter.
